Media Coverage for Queen's visit

Local school children amd Rolf and Alwen Harris meet The Queen.

Thanks to everyone for all your help and support with Friday's Royal opening of the Business School and Knowledge Dock Centre.

We received a call from the Royal car half an hour after they left saying thank you to everyone for such an enjoyable visit. We have also had lots of thank you letters and other positive feedback from our guests who were there on the day, not least Rolf Harris!

As you may have seen, we got great media coverage both on Friday (BBC news at 6 and 10, ITV London tonight) and over the weekend - p1 and p3 lead in Saturday's Telegraph, full page in the Express and lots more bits and pieces in the UK and around the world. Locally we got a nice page in the Recorder, and more importantly a double page centre spread in The Wharf - with no doubt lots more to come.

You can read all about it on www.uel.ac.uk
You can view some of the video coverage on http://www.uel.ac.uk/news/latest_news/stories/video.htm, also BBC London coverage on http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/articles/2007/02/16/uel_queen_feature.shtml
You can download pictures from http://matrix.uel.ac.uk/royalvisit/

If you got any good photos on the day and don't mind sharing them, please do email them either to Patrick Wilson p.wilson@uel.ac.uk or to Jatinder Gill on j.gill@uel.ac.uk. We're also planning to send out a send a special edition DVD in the next couple of weeks with the full story!

Campus Communications and Campus Art

Sprout by Gereon Krebber

Our recently formed Campus Communications Group has been set up to help co-ordinate and develop effective and interesting visual displays of information and exhibitions of work as well as increase the display of art on our campuses.

Two interesting art works currently on display at our Docklands Campus include Sprout which is 8 metres high and was commissioned for temporary installation (2 years) in Spitalfields. Sprout by Gereon Krebber, won the prestigious German Phoenix Award 2005, and the Jerwood Sculpture prize 2004. Gereon is presently in Germany, showing in several cities, including Berlin, with the benefit of Award Kunststiftung NRW Project Funding. Gereon teaches one day per week on the BA Fine Art programme.

African Lion by BA Fine Art student Ned Maxwell is on show in our Business School foyer, next to the bronze cast of Chancellor Lord Rix. Made of recycled newspaper this remarkably life-like sculpture formed a centre-piece for the art exhibition in our recent Green Awareness Day (Thursday 22 Feb).

Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation: Small Grants Deadline: March 31st 2007 The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation invites applications for its small pump-priming grants to fund research projects in the arts, humanities, science, medicine and the environment, as well as projects involving mutual learning in aspects of modern society

British Academy/Maison des Sciences de l’homme awards Deadline: April 15th 2007 The British Academy has a special arrangement with the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme in Paris to support research visits and participation in symposia and workshops. This scheme is aimed at scholars who are interested either in initiating or participating in British-French collaborative projects themselves, or in nominating a visiting scholar to come to the UK. The project must involve scholars or activities connected to the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme.

Modern Humanities Research Association: Publication Grants Deadline: April 30th 2007 These provide assistance towards the costs of publishing scholarly works in the field of the modern and medieval European literatures and languages which, by their nature, could not expect to be financially self-supporting. The works supported by the fund will normally be major volumes in multiple authorship or other projects which would not be considered suitable for the association's own Legenda series.

What's Happened

Jane Riches working on local mural project

NDC Mural

Working with AVA students, local people and business volunteers as part of Newham's New Deal for Communities (NDC) Principal Lecturer Jane Riches has helped to complete two vibrant and expressive murals. The concept for the murals - Art and History, relating to the local area - led to a wealth of imaginative visual concepts. Jane worked as history researcher as well as contributing to design and teaching on the project .

On London Road pathway a mural is drawn from a map of the Plaistow section of the Survey of London published by John Rocque in 1747, using old place names and spellings. The mural at Exning Road sub-station shows images of Canning Town's former industries including Silvertown Lubricating Oils, a passenger steam road coach, The Enterprise, windmills, sailing barges and the area's first local railway.

Our students working on the project include Lanre Badmus, Emmanuel Quartey Papafio, Temitope Akinwunmi, Haykel Ben Thameur, Margaret Wood and Adam Skidmore. Partners included London Borough of Newham, Arts and Business, Morgan Stanley, East London Business Alliance and Newham Community Recycling.

The group are currently working on their third mural which they hope to have finished in about 3 weeks.
