Come and say Farewell to our Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Thorne Wednesday 13 December 4pm – 5pm the Edge Restaurant Docklands Campus
As you will no doubt be aware, our Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Thorne will be leaving us at the end of December for pastures new at Anglia Ruskin University.
We wish him every success in his new position, and would like to invite all colleagues to join him at a farewell tea on Wednesday, 13 December at The Edge restaurant at our Docklands campus, starting at 4pm.
Seasonal cheer includes tea, mince pies and mulled wine.
The event will be followed at 6pm by our final Public Lecture of 2006, which will be given by Professor Lizbeth Goodman, Director our SMARTlab Digital Media Institute.
Olympic and Paralympic gold medallists joined UK and Chinese government officials, university sports students, break-dancing champions, singing stars and local residents at our Docklands campus for the launch of the UK's first ‘Gymsforall’ free outdoor gym, just next to the Business School, at 12 noon last Tuesday.
Gymsforall is an innovative concept, providing local communities with free, hard-wearing, weatherproof and environmentally friendly gymnasia, breaking down barriers to physical activity and improving health.
This is the first Gymsforall facility to be established in the UK, and is a partnership between the London Borough of Newham, Host Borough to the London 2012Games, and the University of East London (UEL), which is a partner in the borough.

The School of Law’s Mooting Society’s inaugural demonstration moot (mock trial) took place last week at Duncan House.
Three senior Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) lawyers came to judge the moot: Patricia Richardson, Tony Barnard and Mark Taverner.
Marks are given as four of our students battle out aspects of the law and the issues of the case. Lead appellant and his junior counsel, Kayode Smith and Anisha Vaja, also President and Treasurer of the Law Society respectively, had fifteen and ten minutes apiece to make their argument as did Lead Respondent and his Junior Counsel, Justin Pierce and Agnes Lee.
The case hinged on a doctor’s appeal against his conviction for murder when he’d removed one premature baby from a life-support machine and given it to another, who he believed more likely to survive. Marks are awarded and while Kayode and Anisha won the case and the appeal was upheld, Justin and Agnes won the moot. They will each receive individual feedback from the three CPS lawyers shortly.
Sonia Crawford Senior Lecturer was Usher to the court and George Laurencin, Employability Manager and Clerk to the Mooting Society said: “The Moot shows how active Law students are and how community organisations support us.”
First year LLB student Neil Paton said: “Most of us want to be solicitors and lawyers so the moot gives us good experience. Maria Kinsella a Combined Honours student majoring in Law agreed: “I think it’s a vital part of any Law degree.”
School of Arts and Digital Industries in China
In November Head of School for Architecture and the Visual Arts Clifford Nichols and member of our International Office visited Tsinghua, which is a prestigious Chinese university.
The Tsinghua visit was in response to an invitation to attend their 50th anniversary celebrations and to participate in an international arts forum with 12 other institutes from around the world.
Cliff gave a presentation and a lecture to Tsinghua students and was interviewed by www.sohu.com - a popular Chinese educational website.
The delegation also visited the Liaoning Institute of Technology (in Summer 2006 we signed a Memorandum of Understanding) and this visit was a continuation of an effort initiated by our Vice-Chancellor.
Cliff has been offered professorship at both universities: Tsinghua and Liaoning Institute of Technology.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed last week between ourselves and Riphah International University in Pakistan. The MOU, for the School of Health and BioSciences, covers the delivery of Bioscience programmes in Pakistan.
This is the first MOU we have signed we a university in Pakistan and so it is a milestone for us.
The gentlemen in the pictures are Mr Hassan Khan - Pro Chancellor and Prof Umar Ali Khan -Professor of Physiology
Details of Riphah International University is available on their website: http://www.riphah.edu.pk/

Feedback please!
We received a unique compliment to last week’s In Focus when someone said he liked it so much he stayed longer in the toilet than he really needed to, so as to make sure he’d read it as thoroughly as it deserved.
Now, you may have noticed a slight change to the layout to In Focus update this week (the opening contents list has been condensed) to make it even more straightforward to read!
Please let me know if it works for you and if there is anything further we can do to improve on it!
