Widening Opportunities for Women
Get Smart! Get Charter Mark!
Are you familiar with the promises we give our students to help them make a success of their time with us? Do you know how many promises relate to your school or service?
On 15 and 16 November Paul Harrington our Charter Mark assessor will tour our campuses and based on his findings will decide whether or not to award us Charter Mark for excellence in providing services to our students. Paul will want to know that our students can rely on us to keep our promises.

Around 150 colleagues attended our Corporate Planning Conference yesterday made up of staff from each of our School and Service Management Teams. The Conference is a key part in our planning cycle enabling colleagues to contribute towards our decision making process and corporate plan which is presented to Governors each year for them to consider and approve.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Thorne opened the conference by looking at our considerable achievements as well as our challenges for the future. Some or our notable achievements include steady progress in moving up through the media tables in recent years, such as the Guardian and Times’ university guides, our results on employability - as well as our student applications which continue to steadily rise. Some areas for improvement highlighted were overseas and part-time recruitment, continued growth in our home market and student retention issues.
Other talks and workshops included Research and Scholarly Activity, The Academic Programme, Customers, Paperless Student Administration and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.
Reflecting on the day and our achievements Mike Thorne closed the conference giving thanks to staff: “Our biggest asset is our people – and it is their hard work, talent and commitment that has led to our successes. What we need now and for the future is to focus on and fully express our own self-confidence and self-belief to gain the widespread recognition we are due.”
Local school-children joined our art students and renowned sculptor Frances Segelman in a race against time to sketch and sculpt Linford Christie at our Docklands campus on Tuesday 3 October. Linford, the only male athlete to ever win Olympic, World, Commonwealth and European 100m gold medals, was asked to sit still for a change as the model for a special Live Sculpt... for the full story visit http://www.uel.ac.uk
