Widening Opportunities for Women

Fellows of the Archbishop Tutu Leadership Programme visited UEL for several days last week as part of their programme, the first of its kind, which brought together twenty young Africans, from eight different countries with the committed aim of seeing Africa's needs from the perspective of the continent as a whole, to achieve thriving democracies and sustainable economic development - through unity.
Peter Wilson of the African Leadership Institute which devised the programme travelled closely with the group and said, "Feedback from the fellows has been that it is life-changing. As a group they have met inspirational speakers, travelled to many places and undergone a range of experiences that will help them tackle the leadership challenges of the continent, and which has enabled them to form very strong bonds."
The leadership programme aims to identify potential leaders from across Africa preparing them to lead and helping them to establish strong support networks.
Fellow Aidan Eyakuze who works in Tanzania as an economist with the Society for International Development said, "I have found inspiration, support and constructive challenges from my peers. We have gone beyond the superficial on this programme and we have made a real investment in one another."
The Archbishop Tutu Leadership Programme is a joint initiative between Said Business School, Oxford University the African Leadership Institute and a network of African Institutions. The visit to UEL was hosted by our London East Research Institute and primary sponsors were Investec, Roche, Eskom and Microsoft.

Pete Cobb Subject Director for Fine Art, Digital Arts and Communication Design has made an artwork specifically for the exhibition area (outer wall of the new lecture theatre) in the Business School entitled ‘The Ambassadors’. The piece acknowledges the perspective and oblique approach to this corridor space and references the painting of the same name by Hans Holbein the Younger in the National Gallery, famous for its squashed skull image.
‘The Ambassadors’ was drawn by hand with a mouse using Photoshop, and was printed on organza rather than paper to add a more physical, tactile element.
‘The Ambassadors’ was printed by the Fabpad located in the Knowledge Dock Building.
