Shelter launches major report on Thames Gateway A major new report, commissioned by Shelter and produced by our academics, shows the thoughts and feelings of residents towards new housing developments in the Thames Gateway. Neighbourhood Watch – Building new communities: learning lessons from the Thames Gateway, was launched to an audience of key planners and policy-makers at St Albans Conference Centre in Holborn on Tuesday 22 July.
Penny Bernstock (pictured right), Senior Lecturer in Social Policy at UEL, was principal researcher behind the report. Penny said: “The fieldwork for this project was carried out earlier this year at three new developments in the Thames Gateway area: Gallions Reach Urban Village, Greenwich Millennium Village and Ingress Park. We were particularly interested in finding out why people moved to these new developments, their perspectives on living there, and the effect that housing management has on successful regeneration." Launching ÜWBI - University Wellbeing Initiative T
his week saw the launch of our University Wellbeing Initiative (Monday 21 July), an online forum dedicated to the sharing of best practice in providing student support. Known as ÜWBI (pronounced youbee), the scheme offers timely and responsive support for the mental, physical, psychological and spiritual needs of our staff and students. The forum provides information-sharing and dialogue about online individual and group counselling for web therapy, as well as suggested reading lists and advice about support groups. Other aspects of the initiative include texting to provide support to students, Second Life virtual support centres, and advice on critical incident management. This innovative use of technology helps to reduce waiting lists for our counselling services, as well as rates of non-attendance. If you would like more information about ÜWBI, please send an email with your contact details to: wellbeing@uel.ac.uk

The conference was attended by around 650 Civil Service economists, as well as eminent guest speakers in the field, such as Professor Tim Besley a member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee. Dr Boyd co-presented the paper with Vindelyn Smith-Hillman of the Law Commission and Appeal Tribunal Commissioner of the Competition Commission. Stratford Silent Walk for International Festival of Emerging Artists Starting and ending at Stratford Circus, this two-hour, 6½ mile silent walk, took place 7 July, and was open to both local and international participants. Taking in Stratford Centre and Stratford International Station, the Lea Navigation, Greenway and Three Mills Island, the Bow Flyover and the Olympic Site, the route offered a range of environments and experiences. The aim of the walk was to introduce the artists attending the festival to both the area and to a way of thinking about engagement with environments. The guided tour, removed of narration, left each participant to reflect on connections: historical, temporal, visual, social, political or otherwise.
