Staff party a great success Over 400 people attended our staff party at Aqua East, yesterday. Despite the weather, guests arrived promptly at 3pm and around 30 party-goers were still revelling at 8, when the party officially closed. Following Professor Susan Price's welcome, Maciej Hrybowicz and Andrew Blake (pictured left) delighted us with a thrilling half-hour set of jazz-funk. After the band we heard expressive and moving performances from poets Michelle Marie and Olumide Popoola, harpist - Sophie Eglin and Dj Alan White, who spun the discs from 3 - 3..30pm and from 5.30 - 8pm. Indoor games of table football, air-glide, connect 4 and buzz proved highly popular. The bbq was delicious and reassuringly British in the warm summer rain. The raffle, drawn by Director of Financial Services, Nirmal Borkhataria and moderated by Dean of Modular Programmes, Graham Curtis, raised a whopping £202.58, towards Leukaemia Research.
Winning numbers are: first prize: iPod shuffle - winning ticket, yellow 118, second prize: champagne and roses - pink 69, third prize: set of 3 UEL miniature buses - pink 40, fourth prize: UEL branded 'golf' umbrella - pink 54, fifth prize: box of chocolates - yellow 314 (claimed on the night by prizewinner Haydn John),
sixth prize: set of six UEL wine glasses - yellow 244. To arrange to collect prizes, contact Anthony Beck on 020 8223 2884, or, email:a.beck@uel.ac.uk

British Council Erasmus co-ordinators workshop We hosted the annual workshop of Erasmus Co-ordinators last week (3 July), which was attended by over 100 higher and further education institutions, from across the UK. Erasmus is an EU funded project which enables students to study at partner institutions in Europe and Turkey for a period of 3-10 months. Under the scheme, students do not pay fees to their host universities, they keep their student loans, and they are currently entitled to a grant of 440 euros per month. Credits achieved at their host institutions can be transferred to their UEL degree programmes. The Erasmus programme encourages both student and teacher mobility. If you would like to know more, contact erasmus@uel.ac.uk.
International Students' Awards Ceremony Around 120 international students celebrated their graduation last Friday (4 July) which was also attended by their friends and family; many of whom had travelled thousands of miles to be there. Hosted by Lord Rix, the ceremony took place in the Business School Lecture Theatre, and was made all the more special by the joyous whoops and cries of many graduands' families. The ceremony was followed by a lively reception, at Aqua East, in the bright afterno
on sunshine.
