Oil rig
Engineering success at Constructionarium event
Civil Engineering students got a taste of real construction work when they took part in a special ‘Constructionarium’ event at the National Construction College in Norfolk, from 30 March - 4 April. Forty-eight students took part in the project, which involved building a bridge, and an oil rig. The completed oil rig (pictured) was floated out onto a lake, and precisely positioned, simulating the construction of a real-life, deep-sea rig. Roy Bayliss, Programme Leader for BEng Civil Engineering, said: "We were one of only twelve universities to take part nationally in this prestigious project and we were absolutely delighted to do so. Engineering is a very practical subject and there is only so much a student can learn academically. Ultimately, an engineer always needs hands-on experience and this was an excellent opportunity to get just that." Many thanks to Kim Hastings for coaching the team and look out for details of future races to be circulated shortly.

Invitation: an after-work walk across the dock
6pm, 22nd May; cost: free. Meet at the Excel Centre reception desk (nearest station Custom House DLR). See www.portsofcall.org.uk for further trails.
Why not come to an evening guided walk exclusively for UEL staff of a new audio trail across the dock, ‘gunpowder, flour and flood’. This audio trail includes the beauty of Barrier Park, the horror of the biggest explosion ever to rock London and first hand accounts of working life in the riverside factories and dockside flour mills as well as a vision of how this area could change in the very near future. Composed by UEL lecturer Jo Thomas and featuring original interviews from the Museum in Docklands oral history collection, the trail is 1.2 miles long and will take around two hours to complete.

Three audio trails around the Royal Docks in East London are now freely available for download or experiencing online at www.portsofcall.org.uk There are a thousand sets of professionally produced trail CDs with map booklets; if anyone would like Toby to send them a free set please email him a mailing address. Toby says: "My time as project director of the Ports of Call project is coming to a close, but I will still have a connection with the University of East London as a visiting fellow. I am extremely grateful to all those who have so freely offered their advice and expertise to make a success of the project."
Listening equipment and a guide will be provided, but please email t.butler@uel.ac.uk to register your interest so we can bring enough players.
