Education and Community Partnerships (ECP) and the Cass School of Education (link: Mary Karpel) have both been shortlisted for the prestigious London Education Partnership Awards (LEPA). The awards, conceived by the Institute of Education and Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF), are sponsored by a number of large organisations. Our separate pieces of widening participation work have reached a shortlist of three in the category of cross-institutional partnership, sponsored by the Mayor of London. The winner and runner up will be announced on 17 June at an awards evening at the Science Museum. ECP put forward our Waltham Forest Masterclasses delivered in partnership with the London Borough of Waltham Forest and funded through Aimhigher. The annual classes are starting again this Saturday and work with approximately 200 year 10 students. The classes are delivered by UEL lecturers, Newvic lecturers and teachers from Newham; the classes last for 4 weeks. Andrew Lowing is the leading Partnership Officer. On 17 May ECP has a showcase event to be attended by our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Martin Everett.

Volunteer opportunity to assist with guided walks around the Royal Docks Training day, Monday 19 May, 2008 11am to 5pm. On the training day volunteers will go on a two hour guided tour and receive an afternoon of training in public speaking, tour guide techniques and story telling with Bethan Tomlinson, a professional actress and guide at the Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace. The training day will be at the Docklands Campus ( Cyprus DLR). Three walking trails have been created for walking tours around the Royal Docks at Silvertown, North Woolwich and West Silvertown. Walkers are given mp3 players to hear recordings of dozens of local people who lived and worked in the area. We are organising groups of visitors and local people to go on the walks and need assistants to help guide the groups of walkers. This opportunity would suit someone who likes walking (trails are up to two miles long), has an interest in local history or an interest in finding out about it, and someone who is confident enough to converse with people that they have not met before, and occasionally address a group of up to 20 people (training will be given). Benefits include:a certificate for completion of the training day; gain experience of public speaking in a supportive environment; learn about local history; free training with a professional guide and public speaker at the University of East London; get a free CD pack of three audio trails around the Royal Docks; travel expenses and lunch will be provided.
How do I apply? Please email project director Toby Butler t.butler@uel.ac.uk with your contact details and brief reasons for wishing to take part.
Newham Mini Games would like to offer our students the chance to assist with the management of the event. They need referees, time-keepers, scorers, marshals, registration staff, and so on. The event is on the 23 May 08 and they need help from 8:30am - 4pm. Students who are interested should get in touch with Daniel Burford with their telephonenumbers and when they are available. Daniel and his colleague Nicole Napier who is also working on the event will come to meet them and explain the event in more detail.
This event is identical to the Redbridge Mini Games so anyone who has worked on that event would be a huge help.Daniel Burford Team Leader Sports Development London Borough of Newham Healthy Living and Sport 292 Barking Road East Ham London E6 3BA Tel: 07785 900 014 Fax: 020 8430 1558 Email: daniel.burford@newham.gov.uk
