Trophy success for UEL’s sport teams

Tuesday 19 March 2013

Wednesday 13 March 2013 saw history in the making for UEL, as not only did the university secure its first trophy success, but UEL went on to win five out of six BUCS conference Cup finals.

UEL teams competed in the following finals: men and women's basketball, men’s football, netball, men’s volleyball and women’s nennis.

The netball victory saw the team become the first from UEL to win the trophy and secure an impressive double, having already won the league following an unbeaten campaign. The men’s football victory came from a last minute strike from Kiernan Hughes-Mason who secured a 3-2 win for UEL against Reading University in the South-Eastern Conference cup on Wednesday night.

Whilst the men’s volleyball team survived a second set scare to power past Sussex 3-1. The basketball men’s first team were victorious with a 79-74 win against Kingston University to make it a South Eastern Conference Cup and League Double. The women’s basketball team had a nail biting match but were victorious with a 66 -61 win over Royal Holloway’s 1st team. The women’s tennis team had their first taste of a championship match experience and considering their opposition were two divisions above them they could certainly claim to have been ‘Triumphant in Defeat’.
