Tuesday 12 March 2013

The British Student Taekwondo Federation’s annual Student Nationals were held in Banbury on 2-3 March. From UEL's Taekwondo club, a total of nine team members went along to compete and brought back plenty of medals!

The competition began on Saturday 2 March, with registration and the poomsae competition. Samuel Del Castillo Guerra was UEL's sole competitor in the poomsae competition, competing in A class, he brought home a bronze medal for his patterns.

Sunday 3 March brought the sparring competition, with all nine UEL team members competing in their respective categories. Samuel Del Castillo Guerra brought home a gold for his sparring in A class; in B class Shaun Shorter won silver; and in C classOvidius Mazuru won gold. There was also a silver for Mark Gallie, and two bronzes for newest team members Sarona McDonald & Anhan Le.

Overall the weekend was a success, and even though a small team, the team spirit was in full swing bringing  back a total of seven medals for a team of nine!

Congratulations to the whole team; Sarona McDonald, Anhan Le, Ovidius Mazuru, Mark Gallie, Thomas Smith, Josie Fox, Stephen Zheng, Shaun Shorter, and Samuel Del Castillo Guerra.  Also thankyou to course instructor and coach, Dan Varzari for all his help and support! Not forgetting Ahmad Walii and Idil Abdi, who went to the event as supporters. Not last but least instructor Suj Fiaz who was unable to attend but sent support via texts and calls!
