UEL has policies and guidelines on a wide range of matters, encompassing everything from academic procedures to HR policies to dealing with the media.
The following are all student-related policies, providing guidance on a range of topics, to help ensure students have the best possible experience while studying at UEL.
This outlines the University’s commitment to ensuring we maintain the highest standards of academic integrity and the steps we take to protect those standards. In addition, the policy also includes information on how we as a university will encourage students to avoid plagiarism and collusion and other forms of academic misconduct.

What is the process for registering attendance?
From the beginning of Semester A, all students will be required to record their attendance by touching in using their UEL ID card on the electronic reader provided in all classrooms and lecture halls. Note the following:
Responsibilities of academic staff:
1. Ensure students are aware of the attendance policy and requirements to touch in at every class
It is the responsibility of all academic staff to ensure that the attendance recording process and rules are followed by bothstudents and themselves.
At least one ‘attendance champion’ per School has attended training on the new attendance register system. Thesechampions should ensure that all academic staff have been shown how to use the Classroom Report at the time ofstudysessions, to verify attendance marks and the total number of students registered in the attendance system.
2. Publishing compulsory module elements
All Schools have been asked to ensure that the compulsory elements of their modules are published and notified tostudents. Ideally, this should be reinforced by appropriate module leaders and academic staff, ensuring that this isunderstood in face-to-face discussions with students.
3. Notify the Timetabling Office of any timetable changes
It is essential that the Timetabling Office is notified of any changes to the published timetable, including different times andvenue changes of any class, lecture, seminar or academic event. This should be done before the event happens.
If it is impractical to do so, the notification must be given within 24 hours after the event. This is because the system canstillmatch those swipe records to the event record in CELCAT if the room is updated within 48 hours.

What happens if students fail to record their attendance?
If a student fails to attend an element of their academic study, they will receive a warning sent to their UEL email address. A further warning will be sent if they miss a second session. If they are absent on a third occasion they will normally be de-registered from the module.
Students whose overall attendance falls below 75% of the compulsory elements of their module will normally also be de-registered from the programme.
De-registration will have serious consequences on the student’s ability to study on a full-time basis. For international students on a Tier 4 student visa, failure to swipe in and comply with the UEL attendance policy could impact on their visa status.
Who should they contact if they are unable to swipe in?
Go to Student Services:
Docklands Campus – NB.2.06
Stratford Campus – R Building, Ground Floor
Why are we doing this?
UEL recognises the considerable investment that students make, both in terms of time and money, when choosing to go to university. As such, we believe we have a duty to follow-up promptly on matters of non-attendance to ensure students are supported and given every opportunity to succeed.
We are also required by Government to monitor and record the attendance of international students on Tier 4 student visas. It is our responsibility to report any students who fail to meet UEL attendance requirements, which are in-line with the UK Border Agency (UKBA) regulations on ‘expected contact’.
Therefore, it is essential for all attendance to be reported accurately and resolve any issues swiftly and efficiently.
How does the attendance monitoring system work?
The attendance monitoring system works by matching the following three essential pieces of data:
Wearing ID cards on campus
Students should be reminded to wear their ID cards at all times while on campus.
Do our Trade Union representatives know that we are engaged in this work?
Yes, we have met to discuss this with them and we will be consulting them throughout the review to ensure that they are kept fully up to speed of this work.
