Building resilient reflective communities of practice using technology in teacher education

The University of Wolverhampton was the first HEI to make an e-portfolio system available to all students and staff in 2005. The School of Education piloted the system in 2004-5 and has driven and influenced its use locally, nationally and internationally.

This presentation will provide an overview of the use of e-portfolios and blogs in pre and in-service teacher education in the University of Wolverhampton PCE partnership. It will draw upon students and colleagues' narratives to explore how Web 2.0 technologies and dialogic pedagogies might offer spaces for critique and resilience to support Ron Barnett’s (2007, p.1) call for “a pedagogy of air” to open “up spaces and call for a will to learn on the part of the student/teacher; to learn even amid uncertainty. In the process, it is just possible that the student/teacher may come into a new mode of being.”

Julie Hughes is Head of Department for PCE at the University of Wolverhampton, a National Teaching Fellow and a member of the research centre CRADLE (Centre for Research and Development in Lifelong Education).
