Professor John Joughin appointed as Vice-Chancellor

On Monday 22 July, Chair of the Board of Governors, Mark Stephens CBE announced, following a rigorous external recruitment process, the appointment of Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Joughin, to the role of Vice-Chancellor for the University of East London (UEL).

Prof Joughin has been Acting Vice-Chancellor for the past six months and as the senior officer of the University has been responsible for all administrative and academic matters on behalf of the Board of Governors, Chairs the Vice-Chancellor’s Group, the University Management Team and Academic Board.

Prior to taking up the position of Acting Vice-Chancellor, John was Deputy Vice-Chancellor for two and a half years and was responsible for the development of the academic core of the institution, line management of the Deans of School, the Director of Academic Practice and Learning, and the Director of the Graduate School.  In addition, he has been leading the University’s research strategy, and has over 20 years’ experience as an accomplished academic.

In an email announcement to staff, Mark Stephens CBE, Chair of UEL’s Board of Governors, said: “John’s dedication to UEL, direct experience of the university and significant track record of experience in higher education puts him in the best position to continue to lead us to achieve the objectives set out in our university strategy.  I hope you will join me to congratulate Professor John Joughin on his new appointment.  We anticipate a seamless transition and welcome him as the permanent Vice-Chancellor for UEL with immediate effect.”

University of East London Vice-Chancellor, John Joughin, said: “I am extremely proud of our committed staff and talented students and I am honoured to serve them as Vice-Chancellor at what is a challenging but exciting time for Higher Education.  I look forward to working with students, staff, governors and stakeholders to secure a successful future for the University in the years ahead.”

Vice-Chancellor John Joughin will be in direct communications with staff in the coming weeks.
