All universities face health critical situations from time to time so our Health Critical Incident Team is here to offer support to staff when dealing with these situations.

Comprising staff from the Student Health and Wellbeing Team in Student Services, the team does not replace emergency services, but aims to reduce the impact of such crises so that students affected can carry on with their daily life as soon as possible.

A Health Critical Incident (HCI) is a potential threat to a student or group of students due to an emotional or physical health problem. This may include acute mental health episodes (where there is a risk to self or others) and communicable disease (such as meningitis or tuberculosis).

What should you do if you are faced with a HCI within your School or Service?

If it is during working hours you can contact the Health Critical Incident Team directly on 020 8223 7599.

Outside of working hours please report the incident to the emergency services and UEL’s Security Team in the first instance. It is still important to inform the HCI team as early as possible so that they may take further action and provide support where necessary.
