UEL Security win CIS 2012 award for the best team – UEL's own security team faced fierce competition from colleagues working at a number of other universities, colleges, local authorities and an NHS Trust. However, their excellent performance during the Olympic and Paralympic Games made them a clear winner. The Chief Security Officer for the United States Olympic Committee said the team: ‘did an excellent job’.
Security awareness – CIS joined in the University’s Wellbeing Day in Semester A, hosting a security awareness stall.
Students and staff were able to enter a raffle for a specialised hardrock mountain bike worth £400.The lucky winner was Sarah Russell, a Multimedia Design and Technology student. The presentation was made to Sarah by CIS Managing Director Neill Catton and CIS Contract Development Manager John Felix, in the presence of UEL’s Associate Director of Facilities Helen Ellis and Security Officer Janet Holness.
Facilities Helpdesk – Call ext. 2000 for all Facilities Services queries – Facilities Services have launched a centralised Facilities Helpdesk number. You can now access all departments that come under Facilities Services by calling extension 2000 and then selecting the option for the service you require. These services include security, maintenance, cleaning, customer services reception, post room, timetabling, environmental sustainability, catering and hospitality amongst others.
The Facilities Helpdesk has been created to make these services more accessible and to provide an improved customer service to both staff and students. You will still be able to access security for 24-hour emergency assistance by dialling extension 7771.

Cass welcome delegation from Chile
– Cass were delighted to welcome a delegation from Chile on Monday 29 January. The group was brought to the UK by the Chilean British Embassy and was linked to Tollgate Primary School, Newham. The headteacher of Tollgate, an honorary graduate of UEL who works closely with Cass, joined the visit to UEL.
Comprising: headteachers, a mayor, several CEOs and two vice-chancellors of Chilean universities, the delegation met with Professor John Joughin; who discussed special education needs and inclusion in our two countries and found out more about the ways in which we work to support HE staff and schoolteacher development. Two members of Cass will be joining a group of teachers from Tollgate in a visit to Chile in March.
UEL is the highest-recruiting university in the UK for the Brazilian government’s Science without Borders scholarship scheme – According to statistics released this week from Universities UK. UEL successfully recruited 160 students under the scheme in the 2012/13 academic year, outperforming nearest competitor, Swansea University, who recruited 60 students.
The students are enrolled on a range of undergraduate courses in ACE, HSB, ADI and RDBS. James Curran, Head of International Development, said,"This is great news for UEL. We continue to get very positive feedback from our SWB students in terms of their experience with UEL and look forward to receiving many more Brazilian students through the scheme in the future."

Pump it up at Docklands or Stratford – Bicycle maintenance kits are now located at the security offices of both Stratford and Docklands Campuses. These kits comprise a track pump, spanners and some maintenance spray. Don’t forget to fill in UEL’s cycling survey to let us know how we can improve our cycling facilities.
Mini Green Move Out
– UEL has collected more than 20 duvets from the mini Green Move Out, from students moving out of halls at the end of Semester A. All bedding items were collected by a local charity, CRISP, who redistribute them to local charities. The electrical items will be disposed of in accordance to UK WEEE regulations. The Green Team would like to thank campus management and residences teams for supporting the project and Veolia Environmental Services for providing the recycling bins free of charge.
UEL is a growing biodiversity hotspot – Results from the 2012 biodiversity survey undertaken by UEL’s Environmental Research Group show that UEL had two special feathered visitors, linnet and fieldfare birds. Fewer than four pairs of fieldfare now nest in the UK, making this bird a breeding rarity and a Red List species in the Birds of Conservation Concern review. The Sustainability Team will be compiling a list of all bird and mammal species seen on campus. Please send details of your sightings to Sustainability Officer Emily Hamilton.
Make your green print – Forget post-its, why not use recycled Print Centre notepads instead? The Print Centre have 13 recycled notepads to give away on a first-come, first-serve basis. They can be collected from the Print Centre at Docklands between 9am-12 noon and 2pm-5pm. Using recycled paper is great way to make a small environmental change and help UEL reduce waste going to landfill.
