Research areas

Having first trained in education and later on in public health and policy analysis, I have had over 12 years of professional experience in international development and health. Throughout my career I have worked for government authorities, international agencies, academic institutions and community-based organisations. I have a wide range of overseas experience through the programmes I led and implemented in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Africa. I have worked for and with the UK Department for International Development, World Health Organisation, United Nations Children’s Fund, and the European Commission. I have an extensive experience in a wide range of public health issues, including maternal and child health, family planning, prevention of non-communicable disease, sustainable development and control of HIV/AIDS. In the past four years, I led the team implementing HIV policy research within a DFID-funded Knowledge programme.

In March 2006, I was appointed as a senior lecturer in health studies at the University of East London. I am a programme leader for two MSc programmes in Public Health and in Health Promotion. I teach the modules on public health in the UK and public health in the global context. My research work within the Institute of Health & Human Development focuses on understanding the impact of structural determinants on health and health inequalities among Black and Minority Ethnic communities in the UK.
