Programme summary for BA Media Studies

Media Studies

Media Studies programmes at UEL are known for their innovative, interdisciplinary 'cultural studies' approaches. This means that you are encouraged to draw from a rich resource of critical perspectives and techniques, including textual and historical analysis, political economy, literary theory, philosophy and psychoanalysis.

The media – print and broadcasting, cinema, the photographic arts and new-media technologies such as the worldwide web – are central to the meaning and making of modern life. Media Studies at UEL analyses key media matters in distinctive ways: the effects of media in relation to questions of racial, gendered, socioeconomic and national identity, the impact and ethics of advertising and public relations, news and journalism, the histories, politics and aesthetics of the internet, popular music and television genres and the unique features of film narrative.

The Media Studies programme was one of the first to be taught in British universities and this distinctive theory/practice programme looks at the different forms of media, enabling you to gain an understanding of their character, content, social organisation and influence. You will also have the opportunity to make media using photography, video, radio, and digital media and undertake a work placement.

About

Media Studies provides critical and practical knowledge of the character, content and influence of the media of public communication, and equips you with understanding of media forms and institutions. As well as learning how media produce meanings, you will have the opportunity to make media.
