Programme summary for MSc NGO and Development Management

The MSc in International Development and NGO Management will offer students the opportunity to examine the central issues facing developing countries in today's globalising world and to learn practical skills that will enable them to work in development.

The programme will not only address theories of  development, but will actively examine how development  works practically in the field. It will analyse in detail how development programmes and projects are designed and implemented. Students will have the opportunity to study participatory approaches to development that are designed to mobolise people to actively take part in their own development. The NGO approach to development will also be addressed with a view to understanding the role that they can play in promoting social and economic progress.

A central aim of the MSc will be to familiarise students with practical skills that are used in development.  These will include such methodologies of programme and project design as the Logical Framework approach, participatory methodologies such as Participatory Rural Appraisal, and NGO approaches to development such as advocacy and networking.  Attention will also be given to project evaluation.  All of these are important transferable skills that are of practical use in development and which are in great demand at development agencies.
