Programme summary for MA Media Studies

The MA Media Studies is a distinctive programme which engages with contemporary debates in the discipline of media studies from a broadly cultural studies perspective. Working always from a historicised understanding of media and cultural practice, the programme explores both textual transformations and the changing cultural, political and technological context in which modern media are produced and consumed. The core unit sets out key aspects of Media Studies and examines some of the different, and contradictory, theories that have come to prominence in this vibrant field of cultural analysis. The programme also offers a unique production component in which students are encouraged to integrate theory and media practice. Students may also elect to reigister for a work placement/observation element within a unit on work practice in the media industries. In all cases of media production or work practice, assignments incorporate critical self evaluation and theoretical reflection. In addition to familiarising students with current debates, the programme aims to develop their research, analytical, writing and production skills in preparation for an extended summative piece of work on a relevant topic of their choice (which may also include a negotiated media production element).

The programme is suitable for graduates of media studies, fine art, cultural studies, humanities, and social science subjects who wish to deepen their knowledge of the theoretical approaches and thematic content of media studies and improve their media practice. It will prepare students for higher level academic work and will also be appropriate for those seeking employment in the media and cultural industries
