School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Introducing our School

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is a creative and diverse community of staff and students with a reputation for innovation in research and teaching. Its unique history has enabled it to have a global reach with world-wide connections to major centres of learning and an international outlook while at the same time continuing to draw strength from its roots in the social, cultural and political life of East London. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is increasingly renowned for its high impact research on social and cultural change, its focus on the relationship between theory and practice and its commitment to offering a potentially life-changing educational experience to all those who will benefit from it. This research- centred School aims to offer a stimulating environment for post-graduate and under-graduate study and to provide flexible opportunities for continuing professional development.

The 2008 Research assessment Exercise confirmed the staus of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences as a one of the Uk’s leading research schools in the field of communication, cultural and media studies. Eighty per cent of our work in these areas was judged to be either ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. The 2008 exercise also demonstarted strength in depth with a very strong performance by all the major disciplines in the School with impressive volumes of internationally excellent work in social work, performing arts and sociology.

The School organises its teaching around seven fields:

  1. Media, Communications and Screen Studies
  2. Psychosocial Studies
  3. Sociology and Innovation Studies
  4. Anthropology, Politics and International Development
  5. Cultural Studies and Creative Industries
  6. Performing Arts
  7. Social Work

Many students combine modeules across field boundaries and one of the strengths of our multi-disciplinary School is its ability to offer a wide range of humanities and social science programmes to suit the particular interests of individual students.

Professor Steve Trevillion is the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences . For more details about school staff and structure, please here.
