The Multimedia Production Centre (MPC) at UEL's Docklands Campus is a comprehensive production facility, serving the production needs of students in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as other Schools. The Head of the MPC is Maciej Hrybowicz (ext 7406), Senior Administrator and Deputy Head is Linda John (ext 2680).
There are numerous HSS modules containing an element of media production being taught in the MPC facilities. Module leaders can book the facilities using a form obtainable by emailing mpcadmin@uel.ac.uk. However requirements for brand new modules might have to be negotiated in conjunction with the appropriate Field Leaders due to space and resource limitations at the MPC.
While a small amount of teaching is still carried out with analogue equipment the MPC has developed an advanced integrated digital platform which has also recently attained Apple’s certificate of Technical Excellence. The MPC assists students in exploring themes raised on their courses through group media productions, engaging with theoretical issues, while also acquiring technical, creative and organisational skills in multimedia, video, audio/radio, audio/music, photography and various combinations of these media. To assist the academic staff in production-based module delivery, the MPC employs Technical Demonstrators. This scheme and other module related help is run by Salma Vohra (ext 7796).
The MPC also provides the university-wide Apple Mac support (ext 7700).
The MPC has an internal-only website which can be accessed on mpc.uel.ac.uk. There are all sorts of useful resources there: basic facts about the MPC, details of its facilities and staff, frequently asked questions (FAQ) also guides and tutorials about our equipment and software.
The facilities range across the whole spectrum of modern production technologies and procedures: press media, video, photography, computer graphics, multimedia and web authoring.
There are three networked Mac Studios and two PC Studios with between 15 to 20 workstations. Mac software includes the full Adobe suite of applications: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, Director and others, Microsoft Office, End Note and finally Apple’s Logic and Final Cut Studio. PC labs include the standard UEL set of applications plus Photoshop, Illustrator and 3D Studio MAX.
The MPC also houses individual Apple equipped edit rooms:
The MPC also houses an AV-equipped flexible lecture room and two rehearsal rooms suitable for music and drama rehearsals.
The Equipment Store could be described as being the 'heart' of the MPC. It facilitates the booking and use of media related rooms and equipment for both students and staff. The Store is open from 9AM to 5PM during semester and provides a loan service to HSS staff and students. The store carries an enormous range of audio-visual and music related equipment in addition to booking all specialists studio facilities at the MPC
MPC web-site (only available from within the MPC) - http://mpc.uel.ac.uk. The MPC site contains all essential information about the workings of the facility, booking procedures and forms, hardware and software tutorials and frequently asked questions.
