Health, Sport and Bioscience Graduate Profiles

Timo - BSc Public Health

In 2006, when I was in my first year studying European Public Health at the University of Maastricht, it quickly came apparent that although I was on the right course I was not in the right place. I wanted to continue my studies at a more international university that had a mature and progressive outlook. Looking about, I discovered a great degree program at the University of East London and was  attracted by the high proportion of students and professors from international backgrounds. After I was accepted, the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience made the transfer process really easy and straight forward.

The course at UEL was very comprehensive; it had a great local context for the UK with in depth examination of the NHS, but also offered a wider global understanding of public health. If you’re after a gateway course that provides a foundation of education in public heath and can easily be repurposed for lots of different specialities in health care administration, this one is perfect. The BSc in Public Health showed me how far reaching and significant public health problems are in society and provided me with the tools to tackle them. It’s truly multidisciplinary and encompasses: politics, social science, environment, management, epidemiology, and research; hence providing a well-rounded course that provides an excellent base for further study or to further ones career .

The course gave me the skills, time and knowledge to develop and define an area of interest that I hope will become my career. I have now narrowed my scope of interest towards development and am particularly interested in policy making and planning. At the heart of this interest lies the desire to create a world where all people enjoy long and healthy lifes. I believe through developing high quality health infrastructure meaningful and long lasting changes can be achieved. The clarity and guidance the University has given to me has been one the greatest benefits – it meant I could focus my effort, energy and work towards a dream. The value in knowing what you want to do cannot be undervalued – the course gave me the goal posts and a purpose. Ultimately, I’d love to work in developing countries for an organisation like World Health Organisation and thanks to School, I’m closer to that goal and a few steps ahead of the game.
