Sanjeewa - MSc Biotechnology

Picture of Sanjeewa

I was born in Sri Lanka and grew up with an interest in the Biosciences. When I was 21 I gained a scholarship to read a BSc in Pharmacy at the celebrated University of Punjab and after graduation I worked as pharmacist. However, my innate curiosity yearned for a career in industry and research and for an overseas adventure. Examining the postgraduate opportunities in London, I found the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience at the University of East London offered an ideal programme in Biotechnology that included plant biotechnology a subject I was specifically interested in. And for an international student the University of East London offered unbeatable value for money and enjoyed a genuinely multicultural student body.

Coming to the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience has been a great way to transfer into research – now I’m at the cutting edge of applied science, looking into new and innovative ways to resolve health problems. Furthermore, the flexible course structure also allowed me to combine my Masters study with a GAP year, so not only have I enjoyed a world class education but I’ve invaluable time to discover Europe.

Although a postgraduate student, I went through a personal transformation during my time at the University of East London; I can be quite insular and shy but the supportive environment and diversity of the School encouraged me to open up, become so much more independent and confident. As a result I’ve learnt so many social and communication skills and to top it off, I even met my fiancée here – we began as study partners and in November we’ll be man and wife!

I’m now enjoying taking my studies to the next level with a sponsored PhD at the University of East London. Eventually, I’d love to take my skills and experience back to my home land and work in biopharmaceutical research and being part of such a highly ranked research centre has provided me with the distinction and credibility I need. It continues to be an incredible experience.
