Despite doing a first degree and postgraduate study, in Home Science and Guidance/Counseling when I was in my early twenties, I found I was still deeply discontented personally and professionally. I needed time out and a new start. In 2006 I took a year out to have a genuine reflection about my personal happiness and what I wanted to achieve with my life. After a long hard think I decided to retrain so I could eventually work in the public health field. I also longed for the opportunity to live abroad. Once I decided on my plan of action, I was keen to get it in motion immediately and I discovered the University of East London offered various term date starts, meaning I would not have to wait months to make progress on my newly hatched plan.
I applied to read an MSc in Public Health and thanks to my qualifications I was offered a place to study plus a generous scholarship. Since being on the course, I feel so vindicated that I made the right choices to come to the UK to retrain – it had everything I was looking for: a broad and diverse course, with a strong research component and plenty of statistical data analysis, health policies, health need assessment and social, political context of health and equally importantly the fresh start to life I craved. I can’t say enough great things about the support network available to University of East London students – the pastoral care goes above and beyond the standard call of duty – I’ve confided with my personal tutor on academic and personal issues, the care and consideration they provide is truly heart warming.
I’ve enjoyed a genuine personal transformation during my time at the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience – since I arrived in the UK I’ve become much more street smart and independent. I plan to get at least two years professional experience in public health in the UK before I return to Mumbai and continue work on my master plan: serving humanity by uplifting vulnerable groups.
