I came to read Acupuncture at the University of East London as part of a long story that stretches back to the time when I was in my twenties. When I was 27, I suffered a serious motorcycle accident and maintained long term injury to my leg and shoulder, which despite various treatments did not resolve my subsequent health problems. A close friend recommended Tai Chi. Having tried various therapies that had failed, I was open minded to this alternative practice. I came to enjoy Tai Chi very quickly and discovered its healing properties not only on the tangible aspects of my health problems but my mental well being too: I felt better connected to my body and gained quietness to my thoughts that I found helpful with life in general. Tai Chi very much served as the induction into a life long interest and passion for Eastern medicine, culture and philosophy. Over the last 15 years I’ve pursued this interest but it wasn’t until more recently that I considered turning a pastime into something more meaningful.
After dipping my toes into further education, for the first time in my life the prospect of a degree began to really appeal to me and I looked around for something that I could enjoy studying for some time. Acupuncture was a natural choice and the course at the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience provided a great grounding in the aspects of medicine that really interested me: the art of diagnosis, clinical practice, and the science and culture of Eastern medicine. Now into my third year, I feel very lucky to have had second chance to experience education. I also discovered that doing the BSc in Acupuncture is the beginning of a new chapter in my life. If I have realized anything during my time at the University of East London is that this is a great place to begin a different path, and for those that have an interest in Eastern medicine and culture, a degree in Acupuncture is not just for those looking to become practitioners but is a great introduction to a rewarding and and rich topic that can sustain lifelong interest.
