School of Health, Sport and Bioscience - Professional Code of Conduct for Students

This code of conduct should be read in the context of the UEL academic framework and regulations available at http://www.uel.ac.uk/qa/manual/index.htm

(This code was drafted as a result of meetings with student representatives and lecturing staff and, therefore, represents an agreed joint statement of minimum standards of conduct.)

1. General / For all classes

  • Students should treat each other and the teaching staff with respect at all times.
  • Teaching of classes should normally start at 5 minutes after the published start time so that students can settle down
  • Students must attend lectures promptly
  • Students arriving on time for the class should leave the seats nearest to the doorway free
  • Students who turn up late (i.e. after 5 minutes after the published start time)  must come in quietly and sit in the seats nearest to the door
  • Noadmission to classes will be allowed after 10 minutes after the published start time (unless given special permission by the lecturerpriorto the lecture)
  • If students enter a class after this time they will be asked to leave, failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the class.
  • If students are disruptive/noisy, staff can ask them to leave, failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the class.
  • Students should not leave until the end of the class without prior consent

2. Seminars/Workshops

  • Students should prepare all set tasks before the seminar time
  • Students must attend seminars on time and will not be allowed in if they attend more than 10 mins after the commencement of the session
  • Students who have made no attempt to prepare any of the tasks set could be asked to leave by the lecturer (those students who have worked hard to prepare for the seminar should not be expected to ‘carry’ those who make no effort)
  • Where appropriate, students must only attend the seminar to which they have been allocated.  Students who try to attend a seminar where they are not listed, will be asked to leave
  • A student may be allowed to change groups if they have certificated child or adult care needs or certificated medical appointments but only if this has been agreed IN ADVANCE with the module leader.

3. Laboratory practical classes/Clinical training sessions

  • Students are expected to attend promptly for these sessions and will not be admitted later than 10 minutes after the start of the class
  • Students should be properly attired at all times in these sessions
  • Students must observe and adhere to all relevant health and safety policies and procedures as directed by the tutor or Lab Technician
  • Students who behave inappropriately may be asked to leave
  • A student may be allowed to change their allocated groups only if they have certificated child or adult care needs or certificated medical appointments but only if this has been agreedin advancewith the module leader.

4. Library

  • The library is intended as a quiet space for working not as a social space for meeting friends and chatting, please treat it as such and respect other users at all times.
  • Computer terminals in the library are in limited supply.  You must ensure you log out of terminals so that other people can use them if you are going to be away from them for more than a few minutes and if you are leaving the library itself.  It is not acceptable to stay logged on to a machine whilst you go away for a class to have lunch.
  • Should a computer be left sitting idle for more than 10 minutes the library staff will log you off and any open work will be lost.

5. Food and Drink

  • No food, including chewing gum, allowed in any classes (unless students have a recognised, certificated medical condition e.g. diabetes)
  • No drink allowed in laboratory classes
  • No glass bottles allowed in any classes
  • Students must take all their rubbish with them when they leave

6. Mobile Phones, MP3 players etc.

  • Must be switched offat all timeswhen attending taught sessions
  • Students whose phones ring during a class or who are clearly listening to their MP3 players rather than paying attention may be asked to leave

7. Talking to fellow students

  • Discussion in seminars/ workshops/practical classes between students is necessary but should focus on work and not personal issues.
  • Any such discussion should be kept to a reasonable volume
  • Talking in lectures, unless in response to specific questions, is not allowed and students who persist in such behaviour may be asked to leave.

8. Recording Lectures

  • Equipment must be set up prior to the 5 minutes past the hour start and only with the permission of the tutor
  • No recording of seminars allowed (unless prior permission given due to a recognised and certificated special need)
  • Students must not change tapes at the front of the lecture hall during the course of the lecture
  • When debating/discussing various topics a high level of respect should be shown at all times to opinions, customs and concepts that differ to your own. The University will not tolerate disrespectful, discriminatory or offensive comments.

9. Children at University

  • Students should not bring children onto University property except under exceptional circumstances
  • Children brought onto University property must be fully supervised at all times and the student must take full responsibility for this
  • In rare and exceptional circumstances we may allow children into a class. This will require the expresspriorpermission of the tutor in charge of the lecture
  • Children are prohibited from entry to laboratories and clinical areas at all times.

10. Attendance

  • You are expected, and it is in your best interest, to attend classes regularly
  • If you miss a taught session it is your responsibility to ensure that you make up the lost ground through private study not the responsibility of the tutor to provide you with additional support
  • Many lectures are supported by outlines on UELplus but these are only outlines and will require additional background reading.  Material delivered in seminars and workshops is usually not available on UELplus.
  • Attendance registers are circulated regularly and at varying points through out the module i.e. labs, praticals, seminars, workshops and lectures, it is your responsibility to ensure that you sign them.  It is an offence to sign registers on behalf of someone else and anyone found doing so may be investigated for fraud.
