After many years managing a hostel for the single homeless, I decided to return to academic study in 1994 and enrolled on an Access course at my local college. Subsequently, I obtained a First Class Degree in Marine and Freshwater Biology from Queen Mary and Westfield College and a PhD in Plant Pathology at the University of East London. During my time as a PhD student I had worked as a demonstrator in practical classes for several modules and I stayed on to run some of these sessions and later to work with MSc students on their laboratory projects. I took over as Module Leader for Mathematics in 2007 and lectured on several Extended Degree and Level 1 modules. I continue to do this work, which included one semester as Module Leader for Microbiology, as a permanent part-time member of staff.
• Presently teaching in Biosciences, as Module Leader for Maths and lecturer on Skills, Biology and Science and Communication modules on the Extended Degree in Science, a one-year programme preparing students for Level 1 studies in the School of Health, Sport & Bioscience.
• I also lecture and run practical classes at Level 1 on the Skills for Bioscience, Microbiology, Cellular Processes and Human Health and Disease modules.
• In the summer I work with MSc project students in the Tissue Culture Laboratory and lecture on poster presentation and thesis writing.
• Joint supervision of Level 3 and MSc Project students
• Member of the Environmental Research Group (ERG), undertaking environmental research and consultancy work.
• Plant tissue culture and microbial plant disease
• Microbial and animal cell culture
• Community ecology, especially aquatic ecology of phytoplankton
• Improving methods for Learning and Teaching to large groups of mixed ability students.
• Have carried out projects on carbon acquisition in phytoplankton, macroalgae and sea grasses, and the evolution of dimethyl sulphide by marine algae.
I lecture and conduct tutorials, workshops and practical classes on the modules listed below, as well as being a personal tutor to students on the Extended Degree course.
