Dr William M. Scholl Podiatric Research & Development Endowment Fund

In 1982, the Dr William M. Scholl Foundation in Illinois awarded a grant of $1,000,000 to Bloomsbury Health Authority (former Health Authority prior to the establishment of Camden & Islington PCT) as the managing authority of the London Foot Hospital. The foundation specified that only the investment income of the endowment fund could be used to support podiatric research and development within the and the School of Podiatry at UCL. The podiatry programme relocated to the University of East London in 2004.

All funding recommendations made by the Scholl Scientific Committee are referred to the Charitable Funds Sub Committee of North Central London NHS Foundation Trust for formal funding approval. Currently the fund is supporting research into:

  • The effect of excessive body mass on the dynamic function of children’s feet
  • The influence of footwear on the gait parameters in hypermobile children
  • Advancing care for children with obesity: an evaluation of foot and lower limb musculoskeletal pathology and characteristics of motor function.
