Sport & Exercise Science

The Sports Science area not only examines the theoretical underpinning of both fitness and health and the development of sport, but is committed to addressing the practical issues concerning coaching and instructing, exercise, fitness and sport as well as prescription, programming and safety, in promoting health and performance related physical activity. The curriculum is diverse and strives to be innovative and encourage creative thinking and practice.

Aims of the Sports Science area

  • To provide a high quality learning experience, at undergraduate level, which is relevant to personal and career aspirations and which will prepare students in the best way possible to gain employment or to continue with further study.
  • To provide a scientific and multi-disciplinary approach to the study of the study of Applied Sport Sciences.
  • To develop a framework of intellectual and conceptual skills aimed at broadening knowledge, understanding and critical appraisal of the scientific processes of the Sports Science area.
  • To encourage independent thinking, research awareness, investigation and analytical techniques to the study of sports science.

Learning outcomes of the Sports Science area

By the end of the programme of study students should:

  • Demonstrate competencies in communication and interpersonal skills, information retrieval and processing, situation analysis, problem solving, evaluation and decision making.
  • Demonstrate good personal effectiveness, self awareness, self confidence and critical analysis.
  • Have a sound knowledge of the key disciplines associated with sports science.
  • Be competent in the practical and instructional skills associated with with the applied sports science area.
  • Understand and make use of research findings.
  • Undertake a project of scientific enquiry related to applied sports science.
  • Utilise all theoretical and practical skills gained throughout the programme to achieve a market edge in seeking employment in an industry requiring suitably qualified and experienced personnel.

Courses

The undergraduate programmes Sport Coaching, Sport Development, Sport & Exercise Science, Fitness and Health or a Combination of these and other subject areas, are designed to meet current market needs and the curriculum clearly addresses the study of sport from both a theoretical and practical viewpoint.

At postgraduate level we currently offer the taught programme of Exercise and Health and are developing a programme in Sport and Exercise Psychology.

Research

The Centre for Disabilities, Sport and Health is based in the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience at the University of East London and has been operational since March 2008. It has principally been developed as a research centre which focuses on individuals with a disability and their differing relationships to sport and health. To this end the Centre provides research into various types of human disability and gathers data across all age ranges and gender.  The aims of the Centre for Disabilities, Sport and Health, include the promotion of the marginalised groups in various cultural dimensions and to provide information which informs the wider community, and sport and health sectors of our society in order to effect positive change. The Centre for Disabilities, Sport and Health is also multidisciplinary and provides for research across several health and sports related disciplines.
