Podiatry

What is Podiatry?

Podiatrists (previously called chiropodists) are healthcare professionals who work as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver the care needed to keep the population healthy and mobile.

Podiatrists work to improve the mobility, independence and the quality of life for their patients by providing preventative care, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of problems affecting the feet, ankles and lower limbs.

Qualified Podiatrists work as autonomous practitioners. Most practioners start their professional career working in general clinics assessing and treating a wide range of foot pathologies. Clinicians may seek to specialise in roles that cross professional and organisational boundaries such as rheumatology, diabetes, dermatology, wound care, biomechanics, orthotics and sports injuries.

Once qualified podiatrists may undergo further training in order to become a Podiatric surgeon or they may pursue a career in research, management or education.

Why study Podiatry?

As a student Podiatrist you will learn about and experience a broad and varied range of clinical specialisms in a variety of practice settings. You will develop your practise in a range of placements with NHS trusts throughout London and the South East. You will also practise and study in our new fully equipped clinical education building.

Podiatry graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council, which is a pre-requisite for employment in the NHS, as well as the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, the professional body of Podiatrists in the UK.

Why study Podiatry at UEL?

UEL students form a diverse and vibrant community and have opportunity for common learning with students on other programmes within the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience. We have close links with NHS partners across London and our students have a good rate of success in gaining employment at the end of their studies. Students benefit from access to first class facilities in the clinical education building opened by the Duchess of Cornwall in 2008. The staff at UEL teach on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the School and have a strong and developing research profile.

New students joining us on this programme please download this PDF for some pre-reading to the programme.
