
Biomechanics focuses upon the evaluation and development of sport and exercise techniques. As such we have a range of facilities and equipment that assist in that goal. Facilities include :-
This state-of-the-art system uses eight camera to track, reconstruct and analyse movements. The results produce a true three dimensional representation of actions.

The laboratory has a number of force plates which record the amount and pattern of force applied when walking across them. This can be used to measure forces in different sporting actions such as running and jumping.
A 2 metre and 0.5 metre pressure plate are used to evaluate the pattern of loading experienced when walking. This can aid in both improving performance and reducing the risk of injuries.
The dynamometer is used to test muscle strength. Evaluation of peak muscle force, endurance and muscle balance can be carried out
EMG identifies the electrical signal that muscles produce. This helps identify which muscle are active, and when they are active during a certain action. This can also be used to identify muscular fatigue.

The 2D system allows for analysis of sporting actions but has the added advantage that the system can be used outside. The latest digital video cameras record the actions which are then loaded into the computer software for analysis purposes.
The system consists of a contact mat and timing gates which offer a flexible tool for analysing power, speed, jump height and throwing speed.
We also have a professional quality S-VHS video camera with playback facilities. This would be used for observational analysis of sports performance.
