4. Key Policies / Documents: Recruiting and Selecting Staff

We have developed a robust policy designed to ensure we recruit and retain high quality people. This policy is in line with our primary duty, which is to meet the needs of our Corporate and HR strategies, and School and Service plans.

All staff are required to adhere to our policy and you are advised to read the full Policy on Recruiting and Selecting Staff. Important general principles are that:

  • We are committed to promoting equality and diversity. Staff should reflect the diverse profiles of our students and the communities we serve
  • If necessary, positive action – such as targeted advertising or statements within job advertisements - is taken to ensure we meet our diversity aims
  • All staff participating in a job interview panel have attended UEL’s Staff Recruitment and Selection Skills Workshop
  • Job and person specifications are carefully prepared using an agreed format designed to focus only on skills and competencies required for the post.
  • Unless there are exceptional agreed circumstances, posts lasting for four or more months (or one semester) are advertised externally.
