Induction: Week Six

Week six marks the last stage of the formal induction period, although guidance continues through regular workplace meetings and reviews. By the end of the week, you need to ensure you have covered all areas of the checklist.

Before you can sign off the new staff member’s induction form, you need to complete four final steps:

Establish regular performance review discussions

Performance reviews are the best method of checking progress against work and learning objectives, so it’s crucial to establish a programme of meetings. Decide the best timeframe between each review meeting and ensure dates are scheduled in your diary and the new staff member’s diary.

Provide opportunities for the new staff member to discuss problems

Ensure there are opportunities outside performance reviews to discuss issues with you and that the new staff member feels comfortable approaching you for guidance. They may feel anxious about admitting areas they don’t understand – so encouraging them to be open is important.

Ensure a colleague is on hand to refer to about day-to-day issues

While you are the new staff member’s line manager, you may not be available on a day-to-day basis to discuss issues as they arise. Ensure that the arrangement you made for them to discuss issues with an experienced colleague is working as it should and helping to resolve issues satisfactorily.

Ensure the new staff member has been booked on to/attended University Induction

University Induction gives new staff the chance to meet key members of staff beyond their department and learn more about UEL and its values. Find out more. By week six you should ensure the new staff member has attended or is booked on to the half-day induction.
