Qualifications and Professional Membership

Additional qualifications and training obtained within the workplace are a valuable way of adding to your skillset and increasing your employability. You can find out more via the Learning and Development Handbook, but here are some of the key qualifications which are supported by UEL through training programmes.

Vocational training

European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)

A qualification recognised throughout Europe that demonstrates competence in computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, file management, communication and presentations. It is designed as a basic qualification to enhance career prospects and consists of modules that can be taken in any order and over any period of time. A ‘logbook’ records progress and is exchanged for a certificate once the course is completed.

Teaching qualifications

PG Cert in Learning and Teaching

The PG Cert in Learning and Teaching is compulsory for new academic staff with less than two years’ teaching experience. It comprises two modules at Masters level. These are: Learning Teaching & Student Support & Constructive Alignment; Curriculum Design, Assessment, Feedback & Evaluation.

PG Diploma Learning and Teaching

The PG Diploma consists of a core module in Research Methods and one further module which you select according to your area of teaching or interest. Options include Problem Based Learning and Distance Learning.

Professional membership

The Association of University Administrators (AUA)

The AUA is the professional association for HE managers and administrators. Membership benefits include news and information, courses, sharing of best practice and networking events such as the annual conference.

We invite all our administrators to work towards the AUA Continuing Professional Development Award. The programme can be tailor-made to meet your needs and offers a range of workshops that contribute to the portfolio of evidence required for the Award. AUA also offers a PG Cert in Professional Practice (Higher Education Administration and Management)

Higher Education Academy (HEA)

The HEA is a professional body for those who teach and support learning in higher education. It works to enhance the status of teaching, improve the learning experience and support innovation. Gaining HEA Fellowship is an important, nationally recognised award, evidencing your professionalism in teaching and supporting students' learning. To apply through UEL’s PSF (CPD Route) you can submit a written application or present to a Panel. All Colleagues who teach or support student learning are eligible to apply. Documentation is required 2 weeks prior to your chosen panel date. For more information on the UEL PSF (CPD route) please see the Professtional Standards Framework web page.

HEA also develops and maintains professional standards of practice and accredits learning and training programmes.
