On 24 October 2011, representatives from each School at the Stratford campus, plus the Students’ Union, planted UEL’s new urban orchard, promoting fruit growing as a viable option for increasing biodiversity and making fresh food available in urban spaces.
The freestanding orchard is located in six barrels between University House and the Clinical Education Building at Stratford and is comprised of two apple trees, two plum trees, a pear tree and a cherry tree.

The School of Health, Sports and Bioscience planted a Concorde pear tree (Pyrus communis 'Concorde') |
The Students' Union planted an Egremont Russet apple tree (Malus domestica 'Egremont Russet') |
The School of Law and Social Sciences planted a Jubilee plum tree (Prunus domestica 'Jubilee') |

The Cass School of Education and Communities planted a Stella cherry tree (Prunus avium 'Stella') |
The School of Psychology planted a Sunset apple tree (Malus domestica 'Sunset') |

Tree planters also enjoyed a blind taste test of 6 British apple varieties. |
Each tree received its own name tag to show which department it was planted by. |
