As part of Construction Week (autumn 2010), a group of students designed and built a concrete raised bed for vegetable growing. Constructed from recycled sand and aggregate material, the bed is located at the far corner of campus, behind the AVA building. The first planting took place during Green Week in February 2011; however, the weeds took over the bed during the summer, so the bed was refiled with soil and replanted with cabbage, lettuce, pak choi and landcress seedlings in October 2011 by student volunteers. Use the email address above to get involved.

The bed after it was left over the summer, full of weeds... |
... And the bed free from weeds after some hard work. |
|
A small carrot found in the bed after all the weeds were taken. |
How to fill a bed with a tonne of soil (literally): 1. Cut the bottom of the bag |
2. Hold it over the bed with a crane and bounce it up and down |
|
3. Keep bouncing till all the soil is out of the bag |
4. Use buckets and hands to spread out the soil (cardboard boxes are useless for this) |
And finally, it's time to fill the rejuvenated bed with seedlings! |
