Biodiversity

Wildlife and outdoors

It’s great to appreciate the natural environment and get some fresh air, and there is plenty of opportunity to do this at both UEL campuses. Green spaces are important not just for people to enjoy but to attract wildlife too.

The Environmental Research Group at UEL has carried out a biodiversity survey of the estate, providing an evidence base for a university biodiversity action plan.

Projects on campus

  • Grow Your Own - UEL's allotments at both Stratford and Docklands
  • Urban orchard - a collection of fruit trees at Stratford
  • Stratford Bees - our very own honey bees
  • UEL's Beetlebump - a brownfield habitat home to 15 streaked bombardier beetles, one of the rarest beetles in the UK.

Going Wild in the City

A successful conference celebrating urban biodiversity was hosted by UEL on 13 September 2010. Part of the UN International Year of Biodiversity, a range of people with a biodiversity interest were brought together to share experiences and ideas.
