Waste Management Seminar

Talking about the waste hierarchy at the seminar

November 21st 2011
Docklands Campus WB.3.02 10am-12pm
Stratford Campus RB.G.16 2-4pm

UEL commissioned Revise Ltd to deliver a seminar on sustainable waste management. Katherine Sherwin, Senior Consultant at Revise, led the sessions at Docklands and Stratford.

The Waste Management Seminars were a resounding success generating productive discussion. The workshops provided valuable insights into sustainable waste management and how it applies directly to UEL staff:

  • compliance with legislation
  • striving for sustainable good practice, linking in with our developing environmental management systems (EMS) for which we are aiming to achieve ISO 14001 accreditation
  • dovetailing with the UEL’s new Waste Strategy, which lays out UEL’s future priorities in waste management.

Useful links

  • The Environment Agency’s Public Register where you can search for all licenses, such as Waste Carriers, Environmental Permits and Hazardous Waste Premises Codes. Your contractors should be listed on here as having the relevant licenses. You can also use this database to obtain your institution’s Premises Code if you are registered as a Hazardous Waste Producer.
  • The Environment Agency’s page on Waste Exemptions which includes guidance and details on how to apply for Waste Exemptions.
  • The NetRegs website (currently diverting to Business Link) which provides really great summaries of all environmental legislation in the UK (not just waste legislation). The site can be really useful for when developing legal registers as it provides a very clear description of each legislation and what the applicable producer responsibilities are. Also a great reference for keeping up with any updates and impending legislation.
  • Let's Recycle - providing the latest news and prices from the recycling and waste management industry, including details of current rebate values (under the ‘prices’ tab at the top).
