Waste reduction initiatives - Green Move Out

Each year, students moving out of Halls discard several tonnes of waste. But many of these items are still in good condition, and could be used by others instead of going straight in the bin.

UEL (supported by the Students' Union and working with CRISP, a local recycling charity) ran a ‘Green Move Out’ from 28th May-10th June 2012 in halls of residence to try and reduce the amount that was sent to landfill and instead collect usable items to give to charity.

More than 3.4 tonnes of materials were collected during the project.

82.5% of the items collected were either reused or recycled, saving of 37.6 tonnes of CO2 (e), which is equivalent to 32 return flights from London Heathrow to Kenya!
