Bin the Bin

Coming soon to an office near you!

Following successful trials in two offices, IT Services and Corporate Marketing, ‘Bin the Bin’ is now being actively promoted and launched in offices all across UEL. Please get in touch if you would like to champion Bin the Bin in your office.

What is Bin the Bin?

Bin the Bin is a campaign to increase office recycling, reduce landfill, and make us all more conscious of where we dispose of our waste.

How does it work?

  • Individual desk bins in offices are removed…
  • …and replaced by several designated recycling points in the office with shared recycling and waste bins.

How does this improve recycling?

Case studies in a range of organisations (from businesses to universities and local authorities) have shown that removing under-desk bins while providing sufficient recycling bins as an alternative has been an effective way of reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

  • Much of what we throw away can be reduced or recycled but having a bin right by your desk provides a temptation not to bother.
  • The campaign aims to raise awareness of recycling: getting us really thinking about which bin an item of rubbish should go in – grey or orange?

So what are the benefits?

Split top bin

  • More waste sent to be recycled
  • Less to landfill
  • Less plastic bin bags used every day
  • No waste or recycling bins standing on their own! (= less contamination)
  • Better use of cleaning staff resources i.e. less time spent emptying bins
  • Increase environmental awareness throughout the university

After the removal date

If you buy your own bin, you will be responsible for emptying it, not the cleaners. You may wish to collect recyclables at your desk e.g. in a cardboard box and empty it into the recycling bin when you are getting up to leave the room, or whatever works best for you!

What can be recycled?

We have handy charts that list what can and cannot be recycled at UEL. There will also be posters up in the department with the same list and stickers on the bins.
