How to Recycle
How does it work?
- Orange bags are for recycling; clear bags are for general waste.
- Our recycling system operates with tinted sacks so it is easy to spot when items have been put in the wrong bin.
- Contamination: putting general waste in the recycling bin contaminates the recycling, so please make sure you dispose of items in the correct bin, just as you would at home.
Mixed Recycling (orange bags)
The cans, plastic and paper that you have collected in the orange bags will be removed only when the bag is full. This reduces the amount of plastic that has to be recycled.
The following items can be recycled:
(NB please flatten heavy cardboard and leave by your recycling bin for collection).
Glass recycling – to recycle glass, please use the outdoor glass bins available on each campus:
- Docklands: One bin by each of the East halls of residence (Kwame, Jamilla, Felix, Clare and Ailsa) and bins for the West halls of residence, located between University Way and Longbridge.
- Stratford: One bin by the entrance to the kitchen in Arthur Edwards, next to the R Building entrance.
General Waste (clear/white bags)
nViro, our new cleaning contractor, will continue to remove your waste on a daily basis. For hygiene purposes, the waste that you deposit in the clear/white sacks will be removed every day, as this contains food.
The following items cannot be recycled and should be put in your general waste:
Please also put paperclips, blu-tack, metal bindings in the general waste bin.
Glass recycling – to recycle glass, please use the outdoor glass bins (listed above).
White Office Paper (blue bin)
Paper-round, a London-based company, will be making fortnightly collections and turning the collected material back into quality paper! This is an excellent example of closed loop recycling. If your office has a paper-only bin, recycle your white paper in here.
