Recycling on campus

On campus you can recycle using the mixed-waste recycling bins – bins with orange bags are for recycling. In some areas you will see our dual bins which are split into a recycling half and general waste half.

Public Areas and outside spaces

At both Stratford and Docklands campuses there are twin-stream bins – half for recycling, half for general waste. These bins emphasise the choice between recycling and landfill, making it very clear which materials should go into which bin.

Classrooms

A new twin-bin system has been launched in all teaching rooms and lecture theatres for mixed recyclate and landfill waste streams.

Offices and non-teaching space

  • Offices have both recycling and general waste bins. Bins with an orange bag are for recycling.
  • Some offices and print areas have additional bins specifically for paper, which has value if it is of high quality and has been separated.
  • We have implemented a ‘Bin the Bin’ scheme in open plan offices to increase the amount that is recycled in offices.
  • If your department is purchasing new bins, please consult with the Assistant Campus Manager, as we are trying to introduce a system of recycling facilities that gives continuity visually, in order to make the recycling message clear.

Halls of Residence

Halls also operate with a mixed recycling scheme.

  • Kitchens have both recycling and general waste bins
  • Please bring recyclables from your bedroom (such as sheets of paper) to dispose of in the kitchen recycling bin.
  • Check the handy chart of which things can and cannot be recycled.

Electrical and Electronic Waste

Throughout the year, regular collections of electrical waste are organised. Keep an eye on inFocus and our electrical and electronic waste page for details of the next one.

Confidential paper shredding

Sacks for confidential paper shredding can be ordered from Post Room supervisors. Only high quality paper (no newspaper) is acceptable, and all folders, binders and book bindings should be removed. Any bags found to contain unsuitable material will be returned.
