Sustainable Procurement Policy

The University of East London offers first-class opportunities and facilities for study and research in a stimulating working environment. As one of the largest procurers of goods and services in our area, we recognize that the way in which we conduct this procurement can have far reaching effects on our staff, students, those delivering services to us and those living and working in our immediate area and the wider Thames Gateway. We are committed to being a socially responsible and environmentally conscientious organization and this commitment extends to the principles that underpin our procurement. To help us achieve this commitment we will:

  1. Make procurement decisions based on a balance between economic (including whole life costs), social and environmental factors
  2. Comply with all relevant legislation as it relates to procurement
  3. Periodically review the sustainable risk and impact of the products and services procured
  4. Encourage and persuade suppliers to operate in a way that reduces or eliminates the risks and impacts identified in 3 above
  5. Encourage Small and Medium Sized Enterprises, Black and Ethnic Minority Businesses, Social Enterprises and local suppliers to bid for appropriate work.
  6. Encourage suppliers to enhance the social and environmental objectives of their business and to develop a proactive approach to equalities
  7. Ensure that our tender and contract documents clearly demonstrate the importance of and our commitment to sustainable procurement
  8. Provide guidance and training to encourage staff involved in purchasing to adopt more sustainable purchasing policies to reduce costs and the environmental impact of goods and services we buy.
  9. Encourage staff to review the consumption of goods and materials and adopt best practice (Reduce, Re-use & Recycle) in their buying decisions.
  10. Work with other bodies to promote sustainable procurement within the HE sector, the wider public sector and our suppliers .
