Fairtrade and Sustainable Procurement

Fairtrade logo

UEL is proud to be a Fairtrade university. This means we stock a range of Fairtrade products in all our food outlets and we celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight each year to raise awareness of the Fairtrade campaign.

We also seek to ensure that as many events as possible held at the university offer fair-trade catering options and products.  To find out more about Fairtrade at UEL, please click on the ‘Fairtrade’ tab at the top of the page.

Sustainable Procurement

Procurement

As a large purchaser of goods and services, we recognise that what we buy and how we buy it has huge social and environmental impacts.

Sustainable procurement is the process of acquiring goods and services that:

  • Meet users’ needs;
  • Deliver longterm value for money;
  • Maximise social and economic benefits; and,
  • Minimise damage to the environment and health.

UEL has a sustainable procurement policy outlining the principles which should underpin all procurement decisions.

Examples of this in practice include:

  • UEL Catering purchasing only free-range eggs; and,
  • Print Unit using only recycled or FSC accredited paper.

There’s also plenty that you can do such as purchase Fairtrade goods from the many outlets on campus and if you’re a member of staff, order stationery from Office Depot’s green book of environmentally preferable products. To find out more about Sustainable Procurement at UEL, click on the 'Sustainable Procurement' tab at the top of the page.
