Energy Campaigns

Energy Saving Week 2010

25 - 29th October 2010 is national Energy Saving Week and UEL is encouraging both staff and students will play their part. Each student and member of staff at UEL produces approximately 480kg of CO2 a year, enough to fill 2 double decker buses each! More energy saving facts and myth busting.

A ‘Switch Off’ campaign will ask everyone who studies or works at UEL to be more vigilant when it comes to turning lights off in empty classrooms and lecture theatres, switching computer monitors off at the end of the day and generally making sure that electrical equipment isn’t left running wastefully in empty rooms.

A Student Residences Energy Saving Competition will be held to see which block can use the least energy per person during the course of the week. In order to reduce their energy consumption, students are encouraged to switch off lights when not in the room, appliances when not in use, put on layers instead of turning heating etc. Each flat from the winning hall will be entered into a prize draw to win a meal at a local restaurant.

‌Report it!
If we don’t know about it, we can’t fix it.  When you see energy waste, poor environmental practice, or if you have any ideas about what we could be doing better, let us know at greenthing@uel.ac.uk.

Too cold?
If you’re cold, think about extra layers of clothing rather than turning up the radiators. A room which is over-heated can become stuffy leading people to open windows. The golden rule is to not have heating on if windows are open otherwise it simply all escapes, wasting energy and money!

Too hot?
If you’ve got the air-con on, close the window.  Air-conditioning isn’t like a fan – it works using a thermostat.  Opening the window confuses the system into think it’s colder than it really is which wastes energy. Mobile air-con units are not effective unless they are fitted correctly i.e. pipes hanging outside of open windows will not cool your office.

Switched on?
Turn off lights when you leave the room, and switch off monitors, printers and other appliances when not in use.  Electricity use in offices comprises the majority of UEL’s energy use.
