Energy and water

Energy use in the higher and further education sector amounts to around £200 million a year and is responsible for the release of around four million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) a year.

In 2010/11, UEL emitted approximately 7949 tonnes of CO2. The burning of fossil fuels to produce this energy leads to CO2 emissions, the main greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

Staff and students need to work together to reduce this level of energy consumption and reduce the university’s contribution to climate change.

Our buildings have varying uses including accommodation, offices, catering, retail and teaching space so there’s plenty of scope for cutting down how much energy we use.  This can range from switching off lights when leaving a room to reporting excessively hot or cold areas.

Consumption data

We'll be displaying our monthly energy consumption so that you can see exactly how much energy buildings across both campuses have been consuming. This information is due to be developed over time.
