Carbon management

In 2007, UEL joined the Carbon Trust’s Higher Education Carbon Management Programme. This involved a detailed analysis of the university’s carbon footprint and in 2008, the production of an implementation plan containing a range of energy saving projects. These were implemented along with further projects over the last few years:

• Installing solar photovoltaic cells and a wind turbine to generate renewable energy at Docklands Campus.
• Installing pipe and valve insulation for heating plant in University House and the Arthur Edwards Building (Stratford).
• Installing new heating controls and insulating the roof at University House (Stratford).
• Optimisation of controls and expansion of the Building Management System (BMS), a computer based control system to control mechanical and electrical equipment in buildings on both campuses.
• Installation of sensors for lighting where not already present.

In 2010, UEL was awarded the Carbon Trust Standard in recognition of the continuing work to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions.

Carbon emissions reduction 2010 - 2021

UEL’s latest carbon management plan is now available, along with approved university-wide operational energy standards. To reach our absolute carbon reduction target, UEL will be working on a range of projects outlined in the documents below.
