Construction and Refurbishment

Incorporating environmental considerations into the design and refurbishment of buildings is an important part of works at the university. Environmental and Energy Design Standards have been produced to help ensure that this is consistent. The standards are regularly updated, if you have any queries please contact greenthing@uel.ac.uk.

Docklands Campus

Docklands campus

The Docklands campus opened in 2000 and was London's first new university campus to be developed in 50 years.

  • SportsDock

The new £21 million SportsDock was opened in March 2012 and is the largest sports centre in East London. This world class sports facility has achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating. Find out more about the environmental and sustainability components of this building, and why the building received a BREEAM Excellent rating.

  • Refurbishment

UEL will be trialling the RICS Ska certification for sustainable fit-outs this year for a refurbishment project in the East Building. This is a great opportunity to set standards for environmental good practice covering energy and CO2 emissions, waste, water, materials, pollution, wellbeing and transport.

Stratford Campus

Stratford campus contains a mix of buildings from the Grade II listed University House which has undergone a number of energy efficiency works, to the newer Cass School of Education and Communities which incoporates a natural ventilation strategy.

  • Stratford Library

The new Stratford Library is targeted to be a BREEAM Excellent Building. The new library will consist of 3,850m2 of floor area divided over three floors. The design of the building also incorporates a number of measures to reduce the energy consumption and CO2 emissions including a highly insulated airtight building fabric, lighting controls, recessed windows and a highly efficient cooling, heating and ventilation system. The exposed concrete soffits will allow the materials thermal mass to naturally aid regulation of internal temperatures. The Library is also undergoing a detailed Soft Landings process which consists of continuing involvement by the client, design and building team to help the occupiers get the best out of the building.

For more information please see the Stratford Library case study.

  • University Square, Stratford

University Square is a joint collaboration between UEL and Birkbeck College, located in the heart of Stratford. The BREEAM Excellent targeted building will consist of 8,767m2 of floor area. The building has been designed in line with best practice sustainable design standards aiming to minimise its impact upon, and where possible enhance, the local and wider environment.
