Are you interested in pursuing a higher professional or research degree in social, media and cultural studies; psychology; health and biological sciences; business; art, architecture and visual arts; law; computing and technology; or education? We offer a wide range of professional doctorate, MPhil, and PhD programmes supervised by staff whose research is recognised within the RAE as being of national and international significance.
Our university, with its purpose-built iconic Docklands campus and historic Stratford campus located within a stone’s throw of the Olympic Park, is at the hub of Europe’s largest social regeneration initiative, one that is transforming the economic, cultural, and environmental prospects of a region stretching from Canary Wharf to the North Sea. The scale of the Thames Gateway initiative, and the intimately-related Olympics 2012 Project, is immense and requires multidimensional innovation and intervention. Our critical contribution to that process has been recognised by the European Union and the UK Government through joint-funding of a UEL specialist knowledge transfer centre containing state of the art research facilities, Knowledge Dock.
UEL’s expertise is thus at the forefront of the government’s commitment to building sustainable communities. Our engagement takes many forms: promoting local involvement in public policy; capturing the oral histories of diaspora populations; developing entrepreneurial skills; designing sustainability into the transformed built environment; enabling participation for the excluded through digital media; fostering social and economic integration; and promoting physical and psychological health. Our MPhil, PhD and professional doctorate research programmes are fully engaged with these and many other areas critical to social, cultural, environmental, and economic regeneration. Given the diverse range of the region’s cosmopolitan communities and the global perspectives required for urban regeneration within a world city, UEL’s research is also truly international in scope.
If you are passionately committed to pursuing advanced within a dramatic regional context and an institution rated within the top ten modern universities for research we would welcome your enquiry.
We currently offer the research degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and a range of Professional Doctorates. Prospective research students can contact the Academic School in their area of study for a postgraduate prospectus and further information on how to apply. We advise that potential applicants consult the relevant Academic School website and if possible speak to potential supervisors about their research interests and proposals. We accept home, EU and internationally-domiciled students on to our programmes, and have recently introduced split-site arrangements for international students studying for an MPhil or PhD, allowing them to study at UEL while domiciled abroad, avoiding the costs of moving to, and studying in, London. Please click here for more information on these split-site arrangements.
Any UEL alumnus enrolling on a M.Phil or PhD programme is eligible for a discount on their fees throughout their period of enrolment, regardless of the student’s domicile status or mode of attendance. Alumni must enrol on their course within three years of graduating from any UEL undergraduate degree, or within two years of any UEL taught postgraduate degree. No application is required: eligible alumni will have the discount applied automatically.
