Research degrees at UEL

Are you interested in pursuing a higher professional or research degree in social, media and cultural studies; psychology; health and biological sciences; business; art, architecture and visual arts; law; computing and technology; or education? We offer a wide range of professional doctorate, MPhil, and PhD programmes supervised by staff whose research is recognised within the RAE as being of national and international significance.

If you are passionately committed to pursuing advanced study within a dramatic regional context and an institution rated within the top ten modern universities for research we would welcome your enquiry.

We currently offer the research degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Doctor of Philosophy and a range of Professional Doctorates. Prospective research students can contact the relevant academic school for a postgraduate prospectus and further information on how to apply. We advise that potential applicants consult the relevant academic School web pages and if possible speak to potential supervisors about their research interests and proposals.

Once you have identified a likely supervisor or School, you can apply for postgraduate study through the University Admissions team via the apply pages on our website. Information on finding funding for your research degree can be found by clicking here. You should also consult our FAQs.

The Master of Research

The Master of Research programme is a taught postgraduate degree designed to prepare students to undertake advanced research in academic and industrial contexts and provide a foundation for doctoral study. It introduces students to debates about the nature of research and theories of knowledge production and enables them to develop a range of personal and professional skills necessary for the organisation and management of research. Recognising that research is not just carried out in an academic context but in many areas of society, the Master of Research Programme also teaches skills that are easily transferable to any other research context. Students learn from experience about real – world research problems and projects within a topic of their choice. They hone their time-management and team working skills, and gain enhanced competence in written and oral communication skills. The MRes is particularly supportive of part-time students as the core modules are run in the late afternnon and early evening. Find out more here or contact Paul Kiff, the MRes Course Leader, via p.kiff@uel.ac.uk.
